Surroundings
Lake Trasimeno
is situated in an ideal area of central Italy, between Tuscany and Umbria. Florence is due north,
Rome due south, Perugia is to the west and Siena is to the east.
The area
The district encompasses eight communes, of which Città della Pieve, Paciano, Panicale and Piegaro are attractive hill-top villages while Castiglione del Lago, Magione, Passignano sul Trasimeno, and Tuoro sul Trasimeno are ancient, picturesque lake-shore towns.
The district’s surface area is 777.98 square kilometres with approximately 50,000 inhabitants.
The harmonious coexistence between the green, gently sloping hills, typical of the Tuscan-Umbrian countryside, and the picturesque panorama of the lake and ancient villages, which contain a wealth of art and culture, has given this territory a particular charm which has in turn fostered over the last few years a remarkable success in tourism.
The increase in tourism has not modified the principle characteristics of the villages, which still retain their classic tranquillity, safety and pristine environment.
Lake Trasimeno, which is a regional nature reserve in its entirety, has a surface area of 128 square kilometres, the fourth largest lake in Italy.
The lake’s maximum depth is seven metres and it is fed by several streams.
From its waters rise three islands: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese.
